Dermal Filler Treatment
Injectable gels used to add volume or refine contour in specific areas of the face.
What is it?
Dermal fillers are injectable gels, most commonly based on hyaluronic acid — a substance that occurs naturally in the skin. They are used to add volume or adjust contour in areas such as the lips, cheeks and the folds running from the nose to the mouth. Some filler products contain local anaesthetic, which makes them prescription-only medicines.
What it is designed to address
- Loss of volume in the cheeks or mid-face
- The appearance of static folds and creases
- Lip shape, definition and hydration
What happens at your appointment
Your appointment begins with a face-to-face consultation with your prescriber. She will take a full medical history, discuss what you are hoping to achieve, examine the area, and explain what is and is not realistic. If treatment is clinically appropriate and you wish to go ahead, you will give written consent and the treatment is carried out in the same visit.
Results
Filler treatments produce a visible change straight away, though some swelling is normal at first and the final appearance settles over the following weeks. The effect is temporary and the product is gradually broken down by the body. How long this takes varies by product, area and individual.
Aftercare
You will be given a written aftercare plan before you leave, specific to the treatment you have had. As a general principle, avoid heat, strenuous exercise, alcohol and make-up on the treated area for the period your clinician specifies, protect the area from the sun, and contact the clinic if anything concerns you.
Frequently asked questions
Most people describe it as uncomfortable rather than painful. Many filler products contain a local anaesthetic, and topical numbing can be used. Your clinician will discuss this with you beforehand.
As with any injectable procedure there are risks, including bruising, swelling, infection and, rarely, more serious complications. Your prescriber will explain these in full during your consultation, and you will not be asked to consent until you have had the chance to ask questions.
Hyaluronic acid fillers can usually be dissolved with an enzyme if needed. Your clinician will explain what this involves and when it may be appropriate.
Yes — for every treatment, without exception. Your appointment begins with a face-to-face consultation with your prescriber, who will take your medical history, examine the area and confirm whether the treatment is appropriate for you. Treatment follows in the same visit if it is.
We will tell you, and explain why. Your clinician may suggest a different approach, or advise against treatment altogether. You will never be treated with something that is not clinically appropriate for you.
